Adverse Possession Definition
Adverse possession is a legal doctrine that allows a person who occupies and uses someone else's land or property openly, continuously, and without permission for a legally specified period of time to potentially claim legal ownership of that property. To succeed in an adverse possession claim, the squatter must meet specific conditions, such as demonstrating continuous use and exclusive possession, and in many cases, the property owner must not have taken legal action to evict them during the statutory period.
